Nightlife Safety Under Scrutiny After Disturbing Incident

Roneel Sami, the president of Nadi’s nightclub operators and owner of Ice-Bar Nadi, has called for a reevaluation of existing rules and regulations to enhance the safety of nightclub patrons following a disturbing incident involving three Australian airline crew members at a nightclub in Martintar, Nadi. It was reported that the crew members were victims of theft and sexual assault, raising serious concerns about the safety and security in nightlife areas.

Mr. Sami emphasized the need for nightclub operators to collaborate with the government and other stakeholders to address these safety issues. He expressed worry that such incidents could tarnish Fiji’s tourism reputation, noting that while this specific incident is alarming, it represents just one of many similar problems that occur outside of nightclubs.

He pointed out that the current closure time of nightclubs at 1 am leads to large crowds waiting outside for taxis, which can create vulnerable situations. He suggests that extending operating hours back to 5 am, as was common in the past, could mitigate risks by reducing the number of patrons waiting outside at any given time.

Sami further highlighted complications such as inadequate parking facilities at several clubs, forcing patrons to walk in poorly lit areas while searching for taxis, contributing to their vulnerability. He mentioned that the lack of police presence during peak nightlife hours exacerbates the problem, calling for the Nadi Town Council to reassess the registration of nightclubs lacking basic safety measures.

In response to these concerns, Saliceni Raiwalui, Chair of the Nadi Town Council’s Special Administrator, acknowledged the incident and conveyed sympathy for the victims. He underscored the need for a comprehensive review of safety protocols, indicating that the council is committed to improving safety measures for both tourists and locals.

This situation serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of proactive measures in ensuring the safety and well-being of patrons in nightlife areas. By working collectively, the nightclub community and local authorities can implement changes that improve security and foster a positive environment for visitors and residents alike.

Summary: Roneel Sami calls for a review of safety measures for nightclubs in Nadi following an incident involving three airline crew members. He emphasizes the need for cooperation with government bodies to improve conditions, like extending operating hours and enhancing police presence, to ensure patron safety and protect the image of Fijian tourism. Nadi Town Council acknowledges the need for reform and stands committed to enhancing safety protocols.
