The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has officially welcomed Lisiate Fotofili as its new Acting Deputy Commissioner, starting from February 19, 2025. Fotofili takes on this significant role while current Commissioner Barbara Malimali is on leave amidst ongoing hearings regarding her appointment.
With a wealth of 18 years in the legal field, Fotofili is well-prepared for his responsibilities. He has an extensive background in prosecution and judicial services, having spent 11 years as a prosecutor at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. His noteworthy caseload included high-profile cases of murder, rape, sedition, and fraud. Since 2018, he has served as a Resident Magistrate, overseeing courts in Tavua, Rakiraki, and Nasinu.
Fotofili’s educational background further strengthens his fit for the position. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Corruption Studies from the University of Hong Kong and qualifications in law from the University of the South Pacific. FICAC has expressed optimism around Fotofili’s leadership, emphasizing that his appointment is timely as the Commission continues its mission to foster transparency and accountability in Fiji.
The transition in leadership is crucial, considering recent challenges faced by FICAC, including investigations involving Chairperson Barbara Malimali, who is under scrutiny for alleged abuse of office. The appointment of Fotofili is seen as a proactive approach to bolster ethical governance and restore public trust in Fiji’s anti-corruption efforts.
This change represents hope for a renewed commitment to fighting corruption within the country as FICAC navigates challenging waters, aiming to uphold the integrity of its institutions.
Overall, this transition signifies an important step for FICAC in its ongoing endeavors to confront and resolve corruption in Fiji, reinforcing public confidence in their governance systems.
