Parmesh Chand has been appointed as Fiji’s new ambassador to Japan, a move anticipated to significantly enhance the enduring relationship between the two nations. Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), expressed optimism about this diplomatic transition, emphasizing that Fiji and Japan have maintained cordial ties since the establishment of official diplomatic relations in 1970.

Chand, who currently serves as the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, succeeds Filimoni Waqabaca, who will become the chief executive officer of the Fiji Development Bank. Dr. Raju noted that this transition could open new avenues for cooperation in trade, tourism, human resources development, and humanitarian aid.

Recognizing Japan’s stature as an economic powerhouse, Dr. Raju commended the country for its support through various scholarships for Fijian students and invaluable assistance during national disasters, particularly through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He highlighted JICA’s vital role in providing solutions during flooding crises in Nadi, which have had a positive impact on local communities.

In reciprocation, Fiji hosts Japanese students who come to improve their English and other academic skills, further solidifying the educational exchange between the two nations. Dr. Raju expressed confidence that during his tenure, Chand will effectively promote Fiji’s unique products—such as spices, pearls, and agricultural goods—within Japan’s discerning market.

The NCCI plans to invite Chand to meet its members before he takes on his duties in Japan, showcasing the strong community support for this new phase in Fiji’s diplomatic relations. Furthermore, Dr. Raju extended his congratulations to Waqabaca, expressing faith in his ability to foster economic growth at the Fiji Development Bank.

This appointment signifies a hopeful step for both Fiji and Japan as they seek to deepen their collaboration, potentially leading to mutual benefits and shared prosperity. With Chand’s experience and the ongoing goodwill between the two nations, there are promising prospects for enhanced international partnerships and growth in various sectors.

Overall, the future looks bright for Fiji and Japan, as this new ambassador role is expected to bolster not only their diplomatic ties but also provide economic opportunities that can benefit both countries significantly.
