Fiji Corrections Service has appointed Nurse Practitioner Vakaloloma Mocevakaca Nakarawa to oversee medical services within the organization. This decision, made by FCS Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, has sparked public scrutiny due to the couple’s relationship, prompting concerns about the integrity of the recruitment process.

In a statement addressing these inquiries, the FCS articulated that Vakaloloma’s appointment falls under Section 130(7) of the Constitution, which empowers the Commissioner to manage staffing matters, including appointments and qualifications, transparently and competitively. The FCS emphasized its commitment to equal employment opportunities for all staff.

Vakaloloma will manage the daily operations of medical services for the Southern, Central, and Eastern Divisions. Meanwhile, a medical officer based in Lautoka has also been designated to supervise the medical unit’s operations for the western and northern divisions. The FCS notes that these appointments are critical for maintaining effective command of the newly formed medical unit.

This recent appointment comes amid ongoing investigations surrounding the hiring processes within the FCS, particularly concerning allegations of nepotism linked to Dr. Nakarawa. Previous reports highlighted that while he advised against his wife applying for the role, she proceeded based on her qualifications, resulting in her selection. The allegations have provoked a complaint to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) and calls for a comprehensive review of the recruitment system.

Despite the controversies, these appointments offer a structure to improve the overall medical care provided within the corrections system, aiming for better health outcomes for incarcerated individuals. The focus now shifts to reinforcing the integrity of processes within the Fiji Corrections Service, fostering hope for a more transparent and equitable environment moving forward.

As Fiji continues to address these challenges, the commitment to enhancing operational standards within the Corrections Service stands as a promising step toward restoring public trust and improving the overall governance of the institution.
