The Navala Youth sevens rugby team is steadfastly preparing for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Amid various challenges during their preparations, including adverse weather and limited training facilities, the team remains optimistic about their chances this year.
Team official Ilairo Belo shared insights into their fundraising efforts, noting that players have actively sought odd jobs, such as farm work, to cover transportation and accommodation costs for this important three-day event. Despite the recent flooding, which has affected their usual training grounds and transportation routes, the players have shown remarkable resilience, using tires for workouts as a form of makeshift training equipment.
This marks the Navala Youth’s second participation in the tournament, and Belo emphasized their ambition to reach the playoffs this time around. He highlighted the need for a focused mindset and effective communication on the field as they prepare to compete against top local teams and international challengers. With many players originating from the same village, their shared camaraderie and bond serves as a significant source of strength in their preparations.
Belo urges the local community of Navala to come out and support the team, reinforcing the importance of collective encouragement from the village. He has also counseled players to stay clear of negative influences and to recognize this tournament as a promising opportunity for a potential professional rugby career.
The story of the Navala Youth rugby team is not just about sport; it resonates with themes of determination, resilience, and community spirit. Their journey serves as an inspiring example of how sports can provide opportunities for personal growth and success. As they gear up for the tournament, their readiness symbolizes hope for a brighter future both in rugby and beyond.
