The ANCF Nakelo Covenant Brothers under-18-21 team is making strides in promoting positive behaviors among youths amidst the pressures of drug and alcohol temptations. Competing in the Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s, the team played its first pool match against the Nabouwalu Selection side, resulting in a 7-14 defeat. Despite the setback, Team Coach Marika Rakai remains optimistic, emphasizing the team’s objective of gaining exposure and learning through this experience.
Rakai noted that the program’s foundation is designed to uplift youths, steering them clear of substance abuse. The team has faced numerous challenges during their preparation, including training runs along the highway and coastal areas at Nasilai, which have helped strengthen their resolve. “We have faced a number of challenges yet we are thankful for enduring it since it has strengthened us,” he explained.
Looking forward, the team is focused on spiritual guidance and personal growth as they prepare for their next games in the tournament, where they are grouped with Aqua Pro Savuiqali, Nabouwalu Enterprise Selection, and Flying Tiger. Coach Rakai encouraged his players to focus on improving and building a strong foundation, stating, “It is unfortunate that we lost, but we’re looking towards the Lord since this is our first tournament.”
This narrative echoes themes from similar youth sports initiatives, such as the Naboutini Village team, which participated in the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s, also emphasizing sports as a diversion from drugs and focusing on community support to uplift the young athletes involved. Such efforts highlight the transformative power of sports, encouraging youths to channel their energies into positive outlets.
As the Nakelo Brothers continue their journey, their resilience and commitment to personal and community values serve as a beacon of hope for a brighter future, demonstrating that engagement in sports can foster growth and deter negative influences.
