The police have announced that they will address the actions of two officers involved in the arrest of a suspect for allegedly possessing illegal drugs in Nadi, while also emphasizing the need for public cooperation with law enforcement.
The incident occurred during a routine patrol when officers noticed two men acting suspiciously. Upon being approached, one of the men fled the scene, but the second suspect, who appears in a video circulating online, was questioned by the officers. During the investigation, several sachets containing dried leaves, believed to be marijuana, were discovered in his possession.
According to police reports, the suspect did not comply with the officers’ requests, which led to the altercation captured on video. The Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, highlighted the challenges faced by officers in such situations, particularly when suspects refuse to cooperate. He acknowledged that while officers are trained to use reasonable force, the variability of circumstances might necessitate different actions to restrain suspects.
Furthermore, Commissioner Tudravu pointed out that the police force is aware of the serious consequences of excessive force and that officers who abuse their power have been held accountable in the past. He reiterated the importance of public cooperation with law enforcement to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The police’s firm stance on accountability and the call for community collaboration reflects their commitment to ensuring public safety while adhering to proper protocols in law enforcement.
