Nadarivatu Forest Park: Empowering Community through Safety and Eco-Tourism

Fifteen tour guides and 37 local villagers from the Mataqali Nubuiluva, who are the landowners of the newly opened Nadarivatu Forest Park, have recently completed First Aid training as part of an ongoing commitment to safety and eco-tourism. The training sessions took place during the park’s grand opening last week and were conducted by St John Ambulance.

The Nadarivatu Forest Park, a significant initiative by the Ministry of Forestry, aims to enhance eco-tourism while prioritizing environmental conservation. This project is part of Fiji’s broader focus on sustainable development and combating climate change, and it intends to serve as both an educational resource and an income-generating opportunity for local communities.

The tour guides underwent a comprehensive two-day First Aid training program, obtaining certificates valid for three years. These qualifications will enable them to handle emergencies effectively during their tours. Furthermore, the Mataqali Nubuiluva expressed interest in extending similar First Aid training to other community members due to the proximity to the Nasivi River and Tavua-Nadarivatu road, which could pose specific emergency risks. Consequently, 37 villagers participated in a one-day intensive First Aid course on February 5, 2025, also led by St John Ambulance, to enhance community preparedness.

In addition to the First Aid training, the village also had the distinction of being the first in Fiji to receive complimentary health check-ups—including blood pressure and blood sugar screenings—provided by St John Ambulance staff. This initiative highlights the importance of health and safety for both residents and visitors, significantly boosting the park’s educational and economic potential.

The training and health initiatives are expected to yield lasting benefits, positioning the Nadarivatu Forest Park not only as a hub for eco-tourism but also as a beacon for community safety and environmental responsibility. The collaborative efforts between local residents and the government symbolize a hopeful future for sustainable development and community empowerment in Fiji, fostering a deeper appreciation for the nation’s ecological treasures.
