Boxing Controversy in Fiji: Legal Battle Sparks Over License Suspension

Freddy Chand, promoter of South Pacific Boxing Promotions, has confirmed through his lawyer Roopesh Singh that a judicial review has been filed against the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) following the suspension of his boxing license. Chand’s legal team is challenging what they deem an unlawful, unfair, and unreasonable decision made by the BCF, asserting that it was inconsistent with both the relevant laws and the Constitution of Fiji.

This development occurs amid ongoing scrutiny of the boxing environment in Fiji, especially following the tragic collapse of boxer Ubayd Haider during a match on October 26. The BCF suspended both Chand’s promotional license and that of South Pacific Boxing Promotions based on the findings from an investigation into the safety measures in place for boxing events promoted by Chand. Eroni Loganimoce, a member of the BCF, has repeatedly emphasized that the safety and well-being of boxers is the commission’s top priority.

The BCF’s actions are a response to the serious concerns raised about the welfare of boxers under Chand’s promotion, including a perceived lack of cooperation with the commission. Loganimoce clarified that the commission’s investigation aims to prevent future tragedies in the sport and ensure compliance with established safety protocols.

While Chand has expressed readiness to cooperate with the ongoing inquiry, the situation remains tense, with mutual respect between the commission and promoters being a significant aspect of moving forward. The hope is that through this challenging period, the boxing community in Fiji can foster a safer environment for athletes, ensuring their well-being as a priority.

The upcoming season for boxing events promises to maintain interest among fans, particularly as Bluewater Boxing Promotion prepares for an anticipated show scheduled for February. This could reinvigorate the local boxing scene and strengthen the sport’s reputation in Fiji, providing a fresh start towards creating a safer atmosphere for boxers and promoting a responsible framework for the sport.

Overall, while the disagreements and challenges continue, the commitment to establishing safety procedures reflects a positive trajectory for the future of boxing in Fiji.
