Two individuals have been charged with murder in connection with the death of a woman in Nausori over the weekend. The accused are the victim’s partner and a woman in her thirties. The deceased, believed to be in her thirties, was reportedly transported to the Nausori Health Centre by her partner on Saturday, where she was pronounced dead due to visible injuries.
According to the Fiji Police, the initial investigation indicated that on the night of May 16, 2025, the victim was picked up from Nausori town by her partner. Subsequent inquiries revealed that both the partner and the second accused had allegedly assaulted the victim, causing serious injuries that ultimately led to her death. They were jointly charged with one count of murder and appeared in the Nausori Magistrates Court later that day.
This tragic event sheds light on the ongoing issues surrounding domestic violence in Fiji, similar to recent incidents that have sparked public concern. In a previous case, a 47-year-old man was charged with murder after the death of his pregnant partner in Nadi, highlighting the alarming rates of intimate partner violence in the region. Such incidents have prompted authorities to call for a national dialogue on addressing domestic violence and fostering healthy relationships.
Efforts to combat this crisis are underway, with various organizations advocating for change. The Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls, implemented in June 2023, aims to address these pressing issues and create safer environments for women and girls throughout the country.
Although these incidents underscore the severity of domestic violence, there is hope that increased awareness and community engagement will lead to positive changes in preventing violence and promoting healthy relationship dynamics in Fiji.
