Former Attorney-General and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has expressed that Members of Parliament who either voted against or chose to abstain from the recent pay increase and benefit enhancements should not receive the pay rise that was approved by their colleagues. He shared his thoughts through a social media post, emphasizing that genuine opponents of the pay rise should consider donating the additional funds to charitable organizations or establishing a trust to support the welfare of ordinary Fijians.
Sayed-Khaiyum remarked that if these MPs were truly sincere in their stance, they would have already taken steps to contribute to community efforts or could still do so, stressing that it is not too late. He urged those MPs who might undertake such actions to publicly disclose any financial contributions made towards charitable causes to foster transparency and accountability.
By doing this, Sayed-Khaiyum believes that the MPs would not only showcase their authenticity in opposing the pay rise but would also highlight the contrasting motivations of those who supported such increases amidst the financial challenges faced by ordinary citizens. He called it a morally responsible action and suggested that such a move could be politically advantageous.
To put it into perspective, out of the total Members of Parliament, 40 supported the salary increment, while seven opposed it and five abstained. Sayed-Khaiyum’s comments reflect a call for ethics in governance and accountability among elected officials during economically challenging times.
