In a remarkable turn of events, Pacific Specialists Healthcare (PSH) has emerged as a beacon of hope for an Australian family. Carol Wallen, an 80-year-old resident of Melbourne, made a trip to Fiji in mid-December 2023 with her son Darren to celebrate her milestone birthday. Unfortunately, during their stay at the Sheraton Fiji Resort on Denarau Island, Carol faced serious health complications, prompting her transfer first to a local clinic and then to Nadi Hospital as her condition worsened.

Recognizing the need for specialized care, Darren discovered PSH and arranged for his mother to be moved there. Upon arrival, Carol experienced a critical cardiopulmonary arrest, and her heart stopped for roughly ten minutes. However, the dedicated medical team, including Consultant Anaesthesia and Consultant Intensivist Dr. Ratu Vereniki Raiwalui, acted swiftly to resuscitate her, employing multi-organ support. Carol later described her care as “amazing,” expressing gratitude for the skilled staff that facilitated her recovery.

PSH’s managing director, Parvish Kumar, emphasized the necessity for hotels and resorts to partner with hospitals like PSH for improved medical support for guests. Darren wholeheartedly endorsed PSH, comparing the quality of care to that of Australian hospitals and vowing to recommend the facility to friends and family.

Dr. Raiwalui highlighted Carol’s dramatic recovery as a testament to the hospital’s high standard of care. Following four days of intensive support, Carol was taken off life support and even managed to sit in a wheelchair, showcasing her remarkable turnaround. The pair eventually returned to Australia on a Medivac flight, accompanied by an intensive care team.

Kumar pointed out that establishing partnerships would not only streamline patient care but also support the local tourism industry, reiterating PSH’s commitment to both residents and visitors.

In summary, this story stands out as a triumph of medical teamwork and dedication, offering a ray of hope not just for Carol but for the many travelers who may need medical assistance while abroad. It underlines the importance of access to quality healthcare in popular tourist destinations, ensuring that visitors have peace of mind during their travels. Such partnerships between healthcare providers and tourism facilities can significantly enhance the overall experience for international guests.
