Fishermen and residents in the Natewa Bay and Viani Bay areas of Cakaudrove Province are poised to benefit from the establishment of a new fisheries station at Matakunea. The Ministry of Fisheries has completed essential traditional protocols, paving the way for the leasing of land to build an ice plant, research facility, and training center to support the local coastal communities.
Minister for Fisheries Alitia Bainivalu announced that a budget of $56,000 has been allocated this financial year for property works in the Northern region. Groundwork is already in progress to finalize land documentation and lease arrangements. Bainivalu emphasized the significance of this investment, stating, “The $56,000 that was budgeted in this financial year is for property works. We have completed the documentation with Lands, and the next stage is to bring the trustees to Suva to finalize the lease agreement.”
Originally, an ice plant was set to be established in Natewa under the 2024–2025 Budget; however, due to the site’s accessibility and historical importance, the decision was made to relocate the project to Matakunea. This area holds historical significance as a port of entry for the villages along the coast of Natewa Bay 25 years ago.
Community leaders such as Api Naitini, the Turaga ni Mataqali Nasavunivonu, have embraced this development, calling it a significant milestone for the landowners and neighboring communities, including Navatu. Furthermore, this initiative comes on the heels of the government’s recent return of 56 acres of land to the people of Nasavunivonu as part of a buy-back scheme.
Once the fisheries station is operational, it is anticipated to enhance access to ice storage, provide stronger research and training support, and create increased income opportunities for the coastal communities in Cakaudrove Province. This project represents not only a direct economic boost for the area but also a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to supporting rural and coastal development.
