Former All Blacks midfielder and current Benetton player Malakai Fekitoa has expressed that his decision to move abroad has been one of the most rewarding choices of his career. Reflecting on the evolution of rugby pathways for both Pacific and New Zealand players, Fekitoa noted that the opportunities available today greatly surpass those of his early years.
The 33-year-old, who accumulated 24 Test caps for the All Blacks before later representing Tonga, admitted that the initial transition away from New Zealand felt overwhelming. However, after eight years in overseas competitions, he believes playing in the United Rugby Championship (URC) has enriched his experience, exposing him to diverse playing styles and cultures. He credited the participation of South African teams for enhancing the overall quality of the competition, likening the URC to the traditional intensity of Super Rugby with its weekly challenges that demand adaptability from players.
Fekitoa praised the improved pathways for Pacific island players, noting that an increasing number of young athletes are now pursuing rugby careers overseas immediately after completing school. This shift marks a significant change in the landscape of rugby, providing aspiring players with more avenues to succeed on the international stage.
Looking ahead, Fekitoa mentioned the possibility of returning to the Rugby World Cup with Tonga, contingent on his fitness and performance levels. As rugby continues to evolve, his story serves as a testament to the positive changes that are benefiting players from diverse backgrounds.
