Sanaila Duono, a 26-year-old rugby enthusiast from Nalidi, Ra, is determined to secure a spot on the national sevens team, emphasizing that there is no age barrier to donning the national colors. He showcased his skills playing for the PWD Bure team during the Tier Two division of the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.
Duono highlighted the importance of local sevens competitions, such as the Nataleira 7s, as essential platforms for teams from rural areas. He expressed that the PWD Bure team represents all 14 provinces in Fiji, inviting anyone interested to join their ranks. In a concerted effort to build a competitive team, Duono reached out to potential players from various regions including Naitaisiri and Dawasamu, while also including talent from his home village.
Despite the festive season causing training disruptions, Duono believes that many players possess the potential to ascend to the national squad in the future. He expressed gratitude towards supporters and stakeholders who have provided vital assistance with food, transportation, and registration costs.
The team’s main objective at the tournament is to demonstrate their talents and skills. Duono is eager to enhance his fitness levels and preparation for upcoming competitions. Having faced numerous injuries in the past, he remains optimistic and focused on moving forward.
Although PWD faced a setback in their first match against Gau Kacau, losing 7-19, Duono is determined to improve the team’s communication and discipline in future matches. He also draws inspiration from Iliesa Nadai, a fellow villager and former national sevens representative.
