During the recent installation of Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara as Turaga na Tui Nayau, Tui Lau, and Sau ni Vanua ko Lau, a particularly meaningful traditional gift captured everyone’s attention—the vessel named Tukaqu ‘o Tavola. Presented by the people of Rewa under the leadership of Marama Roko Tui Dreketi Ro Teimumu Kepa, this boat was not just an ornament of craftsmanship, but a vessel filled with rich emotional and cultural significance.

The unique name, Tukaqu ‘o Tavola, pays homage to a local elder and guardian of Nukutubu Village, known for his steadfast watch over the community’s children. Tavola’s legacy of care transcended his gruff demeanor, shaping him into a memorable figure and a close confidant of Ratu Tevita’s maternal grandfather, the late Gone Turaga Bale, na Roko Tui Dreketi. His inclusion as a namesake for the boat signifies the deep-rooted familial and chiefly ties that the newly installed chief shares with the community.

Ro Teimumu, who played a significant role in Ratu Tevita’s upbringing, emphasized that this gift is not merely political but carries maternal weight—illustrating the protective and nurturing bonds within their lineage. The boat’s arrival in Lakeba is more than a cultural gesture; it symbolizes a spiritual homecoming, establishing the importance of storytelling and community connections in conveying strength and resilience.

Similar sentiments were reflected during Ratu Tevita’s installation ceremony, which marked a revival of the Tui Nayau title vacant for over two decades. The event, celebrated in Narocivo Village, was engulfed in emotions as community members rallied around the themes of unity, heritage, and a hope-filled future. The community is now more than ever united in their aspirations for cultural revival and growth under Ratu Tevita’s leadership, fostering a spirit of optimism for the Lau region.

As Ratu Tevita steps into his role, the collective ambition of the Lau community looks promising, ensuring that cherished traditions will persist even as they navigate contemporary challenges. The legacy of guardianship represented by the vessel Tukaqu ‘o Tavola serves as a reminder of the enduring bonds that shape their identity, inspiring future generations to honor their history while embracing their path forward.
