Lawyer Sainiana Radrodro has urged government leaders to establish a behavioral benchmark for the community, emphasizing the importance of integrity among those in power. During a public consultation in Lautoka focused on the proposed Criminal Records Bill, Radrodro highlighted that serious offenses should also encompass actions by leaders.
She stated, “I know this is also a sensitive issue, and I would like to suggest that once we are looking at serious offenses, we must be able to start at the top. Serious offenses must also mean people like yourselves — our leaders.” Radrodro underscored the expectation that political figures should model exemplary behavior, asserting that principled leadership would encourage similar conduct among the wider community.
Radrodro’s remarks came from a place of personal connection, as she noted her ties to a political family. “I will not back down if it meant my own family was involved in anything that was undoable and questions the issues of integrity and ethics,” she stated, emphasizing the collective responsibility of leaders in maintaining ethical standards.
She concluded by reflecting on the existing codes of ethics and governance, expressing hope that leaders would prioritize accountability in their actions, suggesting that such commitment would foster greater trust among the public. Radrodro’s call for integrity among leaders serves as a timely reminder of the role leadership plays in shaping community values.
