Commonwealth Readies Nadi Declaration to Bolster Democratic Resilience

The Commonwealth Secretariat has raised alarms about democratic backsliding occurring in various regions worldwide, especially among some member states. Dr. Elizabeth Macharia, the Acting Head of the Rule of Law Section, emphasized that concerns regarding the resilience of democratic systems remain a focal point for the organization.

During the ongoing Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting, the Nadi Declaration on Democratic Resilience and Participation is set to be adopted. This crucial declaration aims to strengthen democracies, enhance human rights, promote the rule of law, and ensure good governance among member states.

Dr. Macharia underlined the significance of judicial independence, asserting that judicial systems should remain free from political influence. She stressed the necessity of maintaining a clear separation of powers, highlighting that the executive, judiciary, and legislature must coexist in mutual respect and support. This cooperation is vital for preserving judicial independence and ensuring a robust democratic framework.

The Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting is scheduled to conclude tomorrow, where the implementation of these principles will be further discussed. This proactive approach reflects the Commonwealth’s commitment to uphold democratic integrity and protect fundamental rights across its member nations.
