Drug traffickers attempting to introduce illegal substances into the Lau Group have been firmly warned to stay away, as community leaders take decisive action against drug proliferation in the province. Ratu Meli Saubulinayau, the chairman of the Lau Provincial Council, conveyed this strong message during an interview following the inauguration of the National Pastoral Response to Drugs workshop held in Suva.
Ratu Meli stated emphatically, “For those people who are taking drugs into Lau — whether you are from here or not — you are not welcome.” He urged potential offenders to cease their activities while the community remains peaceful, emphasizing that legal actions will be implemented to prevent drug trafficking in the islands.
He acknowledged that drugs are being imported into the Lau archipelago from external sources, exacerbating the existing challenges encountered by remote island communities. As law enforcement continues to address drug-related issues, Ratu Meli underscored the necessity for local communities to adopt a proactive stance in safeguarding their residents. The province’s unique geography paired with limited maritime surveillance has left it susceptible to drug entry via inadequately monitored sea routes.
“Communities must understand the seriousness of this problem and take ownership of preventing drugs from spreading further,” Ratu Meli urged. He reaffirmed the province’s commitment to pursuing peace and stability, making it clear that any activities threatening the safety of families and youth will not be tolerated.
This collective effort by community leaders represents a hopeful step toward safeguarding the Lau Group from the destructive impact of drug trafficking, while reinforcing local unity and resilience.
