LAMI High School’s under-17 rugby league team achieved a significant milestone by defeating Nasinu Secondary School 2-0 in a thrilling match within the Southern Zone of the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSRL) competition. This victory marks a remarkable achievement for Lami, who have historically found it challenging to overcome the formidable Nasinu side.
The decisive moment in the match came from Meli Semese, who successfully converted a penalty in the second half, ultimately securing the win for Lami High School. Team manager Poasa Soqonakoula expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, acknowledging the strength of their opponents. “We prepared well and knew taking on Nasinu wouldn’t be easy. They’ve been giants in this competition for a long time,” he stated.
While celebrating this victory, Soqonakoula emphasized the need for continual improvement. He pointed out, “Discipline nearly cost us the game, and our kicking game needs work. We’ll address these to be stronger next week.” His focus on development is indicative of a broader strategy, recognizing that success in competitions is about more than just winning games.
Lami’s campaign began positively with a 22-14 triumph over RSMS, and they will next face Nuku Secondary School in the third round of the FSSRL Southern Zone competition. Soqonakoula highlighted the importance of exposing their players to competitive environments, stating that their main objective goes beyond immediate wins. He pointed out, “Winning these first two games is a bonus, but the real success would be if some of our boys get picked this year.”
With this victorious performance, Lami High School’s Under-17 team has sent a powerful message about their intentions to compete fiercely in the FSSRL competition, showcasing both their athletic talent and determination for future success.
