In Labasa, the urgent need for a safe haven for women and vulnerable individuals has been highlighted by Vu Care representative Amelia Simmons, amid increasing incidents of domestic violence. This year alone witnessed the tragic deaths of three women at the hands of their partners, underscoring the critical situation.

Simmons pointed out that Labasa currently lacks any shelter where these women can seek refuge. To combat this pressing issue, Vu Care has acquired land in Vunivau, where they plan to establish the area’s first safe home dedicated to supporting women and vulnerable populations. This facility aims to provide not only shelter but also essential counseling services, addressing both immediate safety and long-term healing.

The organization has been actively fundraising to support this vital project and has formally approached the government for assistance during national budget consultations. Simmons has emphasized that the establishment of this safe home is long overdue and essential for community welfare.

This call for action aligns with the sentiments expressed by Shamima Ali, coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, who has previously underscored the alarming lack of safe accommodation for survivors of violence across Fiji. Efforts to create more shelters have been hampered by slow progress in government initiatives and insufficient funding. Ali has similarly advocated for increased support from the government and the donor community to enhance resources for women escaping violent relationships.

As the community rallies around the need for such facilities, there is renewed hope that the planned safe home in Labasa will serve as a significant resource for many women seeking protection and support. With adequate government backing and community involvement, this initiative could pave the way for improved safety and empowerment for those affected by domestic violence.
