Junior Bula Boys’ Last Chance to Make Top 4

The Junior Bula Boys now face a must-win situation to keep their hopes alive for the semi-finals of the OFC Men’s Under-19 Championship.

Coached by Marika Rodu, the team suffered a 3-0 defeat against the Solomon Islands in their second group match in Apia, Samoa yesterday.

A win against the Solomon Islands would have secured their spot in the semi-finals, but they now need a victory against Vanuatu to advance.

Fiji’s lack of confidence was apparent throughout the match as the Solomons dominated, particularly in the midfield.

“We didn’t start the way we wanted to; the lack of confidence was clear as they were chasing the game most of the time. We conceded a goal following a set-piece from a free kick and throw-in, which shows a lack of concentration,” Rodu stated post-match.

With a 3-0 deficit, thanks to goals from Solomon Islands’ captain Billy Afi and a double from Jimson Abana, Fiji struggled and their undisciplined play was evident.

Fiji accumulated six yellow cards during the match.

“It was a defining moment for us with the yellow cards because it reflects how the players responded to the game. Chasing the game impacts the mental state, and the boys made tough tackles, leading to the cards. We will address this,” Rodu added.

“It’s a learning curve for the boys; we need to learn from our mistakes and focus on the next game.”

Fiji’s players with yellow cards are at risk, as a second yellow would rule them out.

“We face Vanuatu next, so we must keep our chances alive by winning and scoring goals. We’ll review this game to boost the boys’ morale and regain our confidence,” the head coach said.

The Junior Bula Boys will play against Vanuatu on Thursday at 11 am.
