Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru has responded to public scrutiny regarding his upcoming trip to the 2025 Hamilton 7s, where his spouse is also set to accompany him. Speaking in Lautoka ahead of a meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Nadi, Mr. Saukuru made it clear that he is transparent about the trip, which he stated was officially approved by the Cabinet and organized through the Fiji Sports Council.
“I went at the invitation of the Fiji Sports Council,” he affirmed. He explained that while his travel was sanctioned by the Cabinet, his wife’s invitation came at a later time, specifically on a Sunday, and her airfare was reportedly covered by the council.
Mr. Saukuru stressed that he has fully briefed Prime Minister Rabuka about the situation and emphasized, “I maintain that I have nothing to hide.” He noted that while he received an initial invitation, his wife was invited just before the trip.
Regarding criticism and calls for his resignation, Mr. Saukuru expressed that people are entitled to their opinions on the matter. The minister remains committed to proceeding with integrity as he prepares for the event, showcasing a hopeful stance amid the scrutiny.
