Jarryd Hayne, the former rugby league star from Fiji and Australia, has officially made his return to the sport by signing a one-year contract with the Wentworthville Magpies, a feeder team for the Parramatta Eels. This agreement allows Hayne, a two-time Dally M Medal winner, to participate in the Ron Massey Cup, a semi-professional league in New South Wales, beginning in 2025.
The official contract was submitted to the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) by the Magpies on Tuesday evening, marking a significant milestone in Hayne’s quest to resume his rugby career after a seven-year hiatus. The Ron Massey Cup is recognized as a vital step for clubs and players aiming to progress to the New South Wales Cup.
The 36-year-old athlete has already begun training regularly with his new teammates, with his inaugural match set for March 15. Hayne, who last played in the National Rugby League (NRL) in 2018, has faced significant personal challenges, including serving nearly two years in prison for sexual assault charges, which were later overturned by the New South Wales Court of Criminal Appeal.
In addition to returning to competitive play, Hayne will also take on a mentorship role, assisting with the development of junior players at Wentworthville. He previously contributed to the Fiji Bati team during the Pacific Championships as an assistant coach.
