An investigation is set to be launched regarding serious allegations of nepotism, abuse of office, constitutional violations, and unauthorized access to confidential documents involving Acting FICAC Commissioner Lavi Rokoika. This was confirmed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka following a formal whistleblower complaint submitted to the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) and the Commissioner of Police.

The formal complaint includes claims of nepotism and other abuses within Rokoika’s conduct. Prime Minister Rabuka stated that the circumstances surrounding her appointment would be examined. He mentioned that the process adhered to external recommendations provided by a Commission of Inquiry (COI) and legal counsel, asserting that the JSC did not fulfill its procedural requirements during this time.

Rabuka noted that any procedural discrepancies related to Rokoika’s appointment appear to have been rectified, and the JSC is now compliant with the law’s requirements. Specific allegations from the whistleblower include claims that Rokoika hired a relative of Gilbert Vakalalabure, the CEO of the Fiji Sports Council, and took controversial steps to confiscate and examine staff mobile phones after an internal directive was leaked. There are also allegations of potential unauthorized access to confidential documents, with accusations that Rokoika’s husband spends atypically long hours in her office.

The whistleblower has requested an urgent and independent investigation to clarify these serious concerns. Meanwhile, efforts by The Fiji Times to reach Ms. Rokoika for comments via email have gone unanswered, along with inquiries directed at the JSC. The Legal Practitioners Unit, responsible for the regulation and professional conduct of lawyers, has also not responded to the press’s questions.

This investigation presents an opportunity for transparency and accountability in Fiji’s governance, which could restore public trust amidst the serious allegations.
