Allegations regarding inmate Tevita Qaqanivalu have come to light, triggering the cancellation of his family visit and prompting a significant investigation within the Fiji Corrections Service. It has been reported that Qaqanivalu sent text messages that included vulgar language directed at the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice.

Acting Commissioner of Corrections, Auta Moceisuva, confirmed that Qaqanivalu is ineligible for a family visit due to ongoing disciplinary issues and non-compliance with prison regulations. Moceisuva stated, “Tevita Qaqanivalu does not qualify for family visit due to his constant misbehavior and uncooperative attitude towards lawful authority.”

The investigation is closely linked to the alleged vulgar messages aimed at the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice. These allegations have raised serious concerns about the potential use of a mobile phone within the prison, which would represent a violation of security protocols and prison rules.

Although the Acting Commissioner did not disclose the specific outcomes of the investigation, he emphasized that the situation is being treated with utmost seriousness and will be addressed according to the policies and proper procedures of the Corrections Service. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges within prison systems regarding discipline and security, but it also highlights the commitment of authorities to uphold accountability and maintain order within correctional facilities.
