Inaugural Serua-Namosi Community Games Bring 1,000 Participants to Navua, Fiji

The inaugural Serua Namosi Community Games, hosted at Thompson Park in Navua over the weekend, proved to be a remarkable success, celebrating two days filled with joy, competition, and camaraderie. With approximately 1,000 participants, the event featured four engaging sports: touch rugby, netball, volleyball, and futsal soccer.

Tournament director Sera Yavita expressed her satisfaction with the turnout and the overall experience, noting that all teams enjoyed their time in a friendly and spirited atmosphere. The primary objective of the Community Games was to foster safe and supportive communities through sports and assess the level of sports development within the Serua-Namosi region.

Participants hailed from communities including Navunisoco to Navutulevu, with the event designed to address social and economic challenges while combating drug-related problems and HIV cases in the area. It served as an essential platform to unite the Namosi and Serua provinces, promoting peace and harmony among those involved.

Organized by the Fiji National Sports Commission in conjunction with the Serua and Namosi Organising Committee, alongside support from local leaders and provincial offices, the event marked a significant milestone for both regions. Special recognition was given to the Namosi Provincial Office and various sponsors whose contributions were instrumental in making this event a reality.

The competition yielded impressive results, with the Tadevo Community taking home the Men’s Volleyball title, edging out Vunimasi as the runners-up. Nakavu Village clinched the Women’s Volleyball championship, while Veivatuloa triumphed in the Men’s Touch Rugby category, with Qilai as the runners-up. Furthermore, Veivatuloa also claimed victory in the Women’s Netball division, whereas Lobau Village won in the Men’s Mix category, followed by Veivatuloa Village as the runners-up. Rio topped the Futsal category.

This event not only highlighted athletic talents but also emphasized the role of sports in strengthening community ties and inspiring positive change among youth. The enthusiasm displayed by participants and spectators alike reflects a hopeful outlook for future community-driven initiatives in sports throughout Fiji.
