The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is joining forces with BRED Bank Vanuatu and BRED Bank Solomon to enhance access to financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in both countries, a strategic move aimed at fostering economic growth and job creation.

Allen Forlemu, the Acting Regional Vice President for Asia and the Pacific at IFC, pointed out the challenges many SMEs face in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, stating that these businesses often struggle to secure the capital necessary for growth, hiring, and innovation. He highlighted the IFC’s objective of bridging the financing gap through strategic investment, thereby stimulating economic development and job opportunities.

The significance of SMEs and commercial enterprises in driving economic growth in these nations cannot be overstated; however, their ability to innovate and expand is hampered by limited access to funding, particularly in the wake of natural disasters that pose additional challenges. To address this issue, the IFC is set to provide an unfunded risk-sharing facility of up to $10 million to BRED Vanuatu and BRED Solomon through its Small Loan Guarantee Programme, which is supported by IDA’s Private Sector Window.

This partnership aims to enhance business financing, with the IFC also offering advisory services to assist in expansion efforts. Owen Thomson, the CEO of BRED Solomon Islands, emphasized the bank’s pivotal role in facilitating growth and resilience across the SME sector and commercial markets. He expressed optimism about the investment, stating that it will bolster BRED’s business-segment financing portfolio in both countries, ultimately benefiting the small businesses crucial to their economic landscape.

Through this collaborative effort, both banks and the IFC are not only addressing the immediate financing needs of SMEs but are also looking to create a lasting impact on the economic fabric of Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, paving the way for a more robust and resilient future.
