Save the Children Fiji has praised the recent landmark ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which establishes that nations worldwide have a legal obligation to amplify their climate action under both environmental and international human rights law, particularly concerning the rights of children. This decision is viewed as particularly transformative for Pacific nations like Fiji, where children are already affected by the severe repercussions of climate change.

Shairana Ali, CEO of Save the Children Fiji, described the ruling as a critical turning point for every child in Fiji and the Pacific. She emphasized that the ICJ’s advisory opinion reinforces the urgent warnings from communities that climate change threatens the survival, protection, development, and dignity of children. “Now, there is no legal or moral excuse for inaction. Our children deserve better,” Ali stated.

In light of this ruling, Save the Children Fiji has called on the Fijian government, development partners, and local communities to take immediate action. Ali further expressed their organization’s readiness to assist the Fijian government and civil society in operationalizing this groundbreaking ruling. “Protecting children from climate change is a legal responsibility, not a choice,” she reiterated, emphasizing the need for children in the region to have a voice in climate discussions.

The advisory opinion from the ICJ aligns with broader international efforts to hold nations accountable for their role in the climate crisis. Past statements from Pacific leaders, including those presented during Fiji’s appeal to the ICJ, underline the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable communities. The ICJ ruling serves as a significant impetus for nations to ensure they fulfill their obligations towards urgently addressing climate change and protecting future generations.

Overall, this clarion call for action not only highlights the responsibilities of governments but also fosters hope for a more just and sustainable future where children’s rights are prioritized in climate discussions globally.
