The construction of new homes for the Nabavatu village community in Dreketi has experienced a two-month delay. Originally set to commence on January 20, the process was postponed due to weather conditions and material availability, as noted by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management’s permanent secretary, Isoa Talemaibua.

Minister Sakiasi Ditoka has emphasized that the pouring of the foundation stones for the first ten homes is scheduled for the upcoming week. Despite the earlier setback, he remains confident that these homes will be completed by July. The new village will feature modern infrastructure, with utilities hidden underground, reflecting a commitment to creating a sustainable living environment.

This project has been made possible through funding from the Climate Relocation of Communities Trust Fund, which was crucial for relocating residents displaced by Tropical Cyclone Ana in January 2021. The cyclone significantly impacted 38 families, subjecting them to challenging living conditions in temporary tents. The initiative aims to restore stability and pride within the community, as Minister Ditoka highlighted that no funds were allocated for their relocation under the previous government.

The 37 planned homes are part of a broader effort, with a total budget estimated at approximately $5.9 million, signaling the government’s focus on disaster resilience and recovery. This development showcases the importance of strong governmental support in rebuilding lives post-disaster, offering a hopeful future as the community looks forward to returning to a more stable and sustainable living situation.

The ongoing support for the Nabavatu community reflects their strength and unity in overcoming adversity. As families prepare to move into their new homes, this initiative serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, underlining the community’s determinations as they work towards recovering stability in their lives.
