Fifteen descendants of Girmitiyas were honored in Labasa for their remarkable contributions to the communities across Vanua Levu. This recognition highlights the dedication these individuals have shown and underscores the government’s commitment to fostering inclusion and diversity within the nation.
Honorees, who traveled from as distant as Bua, came together to celebrate this significant occasion, which emphasizes the connection between heritage and community development. One of the recipients, 86-year-old Dood Nath from Korokadi Bua, expressed his gratitude, stating, “For me this is so special, and I would like to thank the organizing committee and the ministry for this recognition. It’s a piece of history that needs to be remembered by everyone, especially the descendant generations.” Nath also acknowledged the progress Fiji has made, urging all to continue forward together.
Another honoree, 73-year-old Leela Wati, highlighted the importance of understanding history among the youth, emphasizing that it serves as the foundation for their success.
Excitingly, the recognition of more Girmitiya descendants is set to continue in the following days as part of the 146th Girmit National commemoration in Labasa, which will include a variety of events such as cultural performances and storytelling. These festivities aim not only to reflect on the struggles and sacrifices of the Girmitiyas but also to inspire future collaboration and unity among Fiji’s diverse communities.
This year’s theme, “Preserving the Past, Envisioning the Future,” resonates profoundly, connecting the historical significance of the Girmit narrative with aspirations for a cohesive and inclusive society moving forward. The gathering of communities around these celebrations serves as a hopeful reminder of the resilience ingrained in Fiji’s culture and the promise of a brighter future.
