Solo sailor Renaud Stitelmann from Switzerland is set to be the first to drive his fleet into Vuda Marina, Lautoka, this weekend as part of the groundbreaking McIntyre Mini Globe Race. This unique challenge involves 15 solo sailors from eight countries navigating identical self-built plywood yachts, covering a remarkable 12,000 nautical miles over the span of 13 months since departing from Portugal last December.
Adam Wade, general manager and CEO of Vuda Marina Fiji, expressed the significance of this event, noting it as Fiji’s first-ever stopover for an around-the-world yacht race. Wade described the mini yachts as extraordinary and commended the sailors as inspirational figures. “These skilled solo sailors are an inspiration, and we’re proud to partner with this growing international event,” he stated.
Race organizer Don McIntyre highlighted the culmination of four years of planning leading to this moment. He expressed excitement about reaching Vuda Marina, stating that Fiji’s renowned hospitality would provide a much-needed respite for the sailors before they continue to face the challenges of the next leg of the race. After the stopover, the competitors plan to set sail to Australia’s northern coast, navigating towards the treacherous Southern Ocean aiming to reach Cape Town, South Africa by Christmas.
This historic McIntyre Mini Globe Race celebrates the 75th anniversary of John Guzzwell’s pioneering journey in 1955, where he became the first person to sail around the world in a home-built mini yacht.
