In a revealing discussion about the aftermath of sexual abuse, Inieta Benaca, a Community Team Leader with the Homes of Hope Organization, shared that many survivors often distance themselves from their families. This phenomenon primarily stems from the unsettling reality that approximately 90 percent of abuse victims report their assaults were perpetrated by family members.
Benaca emphasized the significant challenges survivors face when attempting to reconnect with their families. “Rebuilding the bridge between her and her family is challenging. It takes time for her to return to her life before the abuse, but at least we provide her with a fresh start,” she stated. The process of integrating victims back into their family dynamics relies heavily on two critical factors: the acceptance of the family and the readiness of victims to return home.
Recognizing the importance of collaboration, she mentioned that Homes of Hope is actively partnering with government and private stakeholders to enhance support structures for survivors. The organization has reported various success stories where individuals have transitioned successfully into society, some establishing their own businesses and integrating into both private and public sectors.
Benaca shared a poignant message from a survivor who expressed gratitude for the fresh start the organization provided, underscoring the positive impact of their efforts. “I hope we will have the lenses to look at the problem and not walk away,” she said, reflecting the organization’s hopeful vision for a future where abuse cases dwindle, and communities become safer for all.
This narrative resonates with recent conversations about the societal challenges surrounding victims of abuse, including the “conspiracy of silence” highlighted by Shamima Ali from the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, which often protects abusers at the expense of victims. Both Benaca and Ali’s sentiments underscore the pressing need for community-wide awareness and advocacy to foster an environment where survivors feel supported and empowered to reclaim their lives.
The message is clear: with collective effort and compassion, society can move closer to eradicating abuse, ensuring a nurturing environment for future generations.
