The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) management board has confirmed that Viliame Gavoka will retain his position as Deputy Prime Minister within the Coalition Government, continuing to uphold the status quo. The decision was made during a meeting held in Suva, where discussions reflected a commitment to maintaining the leadership structure for the sake of the Burebasaga confederacy’s honor.

Gavoka emphasized that even amid suggestions for a change in leadership roles, the board concluded that consistency in the Deputy Prime Minister’s position was essential. This decision is rooted in the party’s historical commitment to representation within the senior levels of government, with the Prime Minister from Tovata, one Deputy Prime Minister from Kubuna, and another from Burebasaga, to ensure fair representation among the three main confederacies.

In addition to discussing the DPM position, the SODELPA board outlined four important agenda items during the meeting. These include plans to establish a committee for consultations on electoral law changes, the preparation of a presentation for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the upcoming Annual General Meeting scheduled for the end of March.

The management board reiterated their ongoing commitment to effective governance and collaboration among coalition partners, aiming to foster national unity and inclusivity. This supportive atmosphere is vital as Fiji approaches the 2026 elections, as SODELPA encourages citizens to engage in their mission for stability and progress.

This decision not only reflects SODELPA’s commitment to uphold its traditions of representation but also promotes a hopeful narrative for Fiji’s political future, where consistent leadership could enable progressive governance and foster trust among partners within the coalition.
