Kaveni Roseru, a front-row player for the Silktails, recently explored the realm of sevens rugby while participating in the Under-19 Senikau club at the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament. Although primarily accustomed to rugby league, Roseru’s experience in different formats of the game demonstrates his versatility as an athlete.

With a background that includes playing as a flanker for Naitasiri Secondary School during the Deans rugby competition, Roseru has also engaged in rugby league with his school’s Under-19 team. Last year, his team faced challenges, falling short against Ratu Kadavulevu School in both rugby league and union quarterfinals.

Roseru’s journey in rugby took a significant turn when he was approached by Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata after the Under-19 final. This opportunity led him to represent the Junior Fiji Bati team in a match against the visiting Australian Schoolboys, and eventually, he secured a spot on the Kaiviti Silktails team, now in his second year competing in the Jersey Flegg competition.

At just 19 years old, Roseru hails from Nukuloa village in Naitasiri, and attributes his success to divine guidance and the steadfast support of his family. He emphasizes the values of patience and determination in sports, urging young athletes to respect their parents, which he believes will open many doors in their sporting careers.

Roseru’s dedication is evident through his commitment to training, often walking or running from his village to school. He holds a vision of securing a contract to play in the National Rugby League (NRL) and has gained valuable insights from his time in the Jersey Flegg competition, noting the faster pace compared to other formats.

He remains inspired by the struggles of his parents, using their hard work as motivation to persevere through difficulties. Discipline, a crucial lesson he learned from rugby league, guides his actions both on and off the field. Looking ahead, Roseru aspires to represent the Fiji Bati team someday, a goal sparked by witnessing their performance on home soil.

This story of Kaveni Roseru underscores the importance of perseverance and familial support in pursuing one’s dreams in sports. Young athletes can look up to Roseru as a role model, learning the values of hard work, resilience, and the power of a positive mindset in overcoming challenges.
