From Turmoil to Togetherness: Fiji’s Journey of Resilience and Community

As Fiji commemorates the 38th anniversary of the first military coup on May 14, 1987, many individuals reflect on the significant changes that event brought to the nation. Among them is Deo Dutt, now in his 70s, who remembers how the coup impacted his life and community in Vuniyalayala, Labasa. The coup forced many to rebuild their lives in difficult circumstances, yet it also revealed the strength of community ties during turbulent times.

Dutt recalls the solidarity displayed by nearby villagers, emphasizing how they came together to protect local Indo-Fijians during that unsettling period. “The villagers from the nearby koro were very kind; they didn’t do anything to us or our village,” he reflected, highlighting how this kindness helped shield them from some of the violence that affected other areas. The social fabric forged then continues to resonate today, as Dutt and his wife, Kanya Wati, maintain close ties with the villagers who supported them.

Kanya Wati remembers the fear that gripped their community, leading to a halt in daily activities, including farming and even washing clothes. Their concern for their children’s safety was paramount, as they kept them away from the outside, wary of any sudden military presence.

Now residing in the Qeledamu cane farming community, the couple has turned adversity into a message of hope, advocating for hard work, love, and respect for all ethnicities. This perspective is particularly relevant as discussions around the complex historical landscape of Fiji continue, including the recognition of the contributions various communities have made to the nation.

The reflections of the Dutt couple echo sentiments recently voiced by leaders, such as Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, acknowledging the painful history while pointing to the resilience exhibited by the Fijian people. This resilience, showcased through shared support and collaboration, serves as a beacon of hope for the future of Fiji, suggesting a potential for healing and unity even after challenging experiences.

The journey of rebuilding and fostering a sense of community, as illustrated by the experiences of Deo Dutt and Kanya Wati, exemplifies how even amidst difficult circumstances, enduring bonds can lead to a brighter and more inclusive future for all Fijians.
