Every so often, inspiring stories emerge from Fiji, highlighting individuals who triumph over challenges and turn their lives around. For many, what seems like a dark chapter serves as a crucial milestone on the path to success.
Esther Lusiana Kuva, the head girl and dux award winner of Nakasi High School, shared her own powerful story of resilience a few days ago. The 18-year-old from Korovisilou Village in Serua emotionally dedicated her achievements to her late mother, who passed away from bone cancer last year just before Esther completed her Year 12 examinations.
“My mother’s absence weighed heavily on my siblings and me,” Esther admitted, tears in her eyes, upon receiving her award. She reflected on the challenges she faced in balancing academics with her leadership role, expressing disbelief at winning multiple awards despite the hurdles.
Gratefulness flooded Esther’s speech as she acknowledged the support of her family during her difficult times. She particularly thanked her aunt and uncle for taking her family in and her grandmother for providing unwavering assistance. “Though my mom is not physically present, I feel her spirit with me,” she added.
Esther’s dedication and hard work bore fruit, as she earned numerous accolades, including the Year 13 prize, a leadership award, distinctions in various subjects like English and Mathematics, and the coveted Dux award for 2024.
Her family, especially her grandmother Ana Qitialewa, beamed with pride. Ana noted Esther’s exceptional discipline and commitment, highlighting her consistent early morning travels for school and her diligent study habits. “Her mother would be incredibly proud of her accomplishments,” Ana reflected.
Looking ahead, the family is preparing to move to a new home in Koronivia, thanks to a recent land purchase by Esther’s father. As she contemplates her future, Esther is focused on pursuing a career in the medical field, weighing her options between nursing and dental care.
Esther’s story is a testament to the power of sacrifice, dedication, and faith. As she advised, “Put God first in everything you do, and He will guide you.”
This remarkable journey not only emphasizes the resilience of individuals like Esther but also serves as a beacon of hope for others facing adversity. The support of family and community can lead to inspiring transformations, proving that success often follows persistence and hard work.
