When Waisale Serevi, a renowned sevens rugby player and family friend, gifted a rugby ball to one-year-old Jone Kubu, he set the foundation for an extraordinary journey ahead. Kubu, who is now preparing to make his debut with the Kenyan national team at the HSBC Vancouver Sevens tournament in Canada this weekend, is on the cusp of fulfilling a lifelong dream.
Kubu’s mother, Ilisapeci Tavaga, expressed her pride in a recent interview. She shared that her late husband, Seveci Tavaga, would have been proud to witness their son’s accomplishment, having passed away earlier this year. Tavaga emphasized that Kubu’s selection is a testament to his hard work and aspirations, stating, “I know for a fact that he’s following his dreams.”
Kubu had always envisioned a career in rugby. From a young age, he communicated his desire to be a rugby player, inspired by the rugby ball gifted to him. Despite opportunities to return home to Fiji, Kubu chose to remain in Kenya, where he has dedicated himself to the sport, stating, “This is where I rose up to international level, and I’ll stay here to fulfill my dreams of playing in the HSBC (Sevens).”
This weekend, Kubu and his teammates will face tough competition, starting with matches against teams in Pool A, including Argentina and France. His journey is highlighted not only by his individual aspirations but also by the larger narrative of the growing talent within Kenyan rugby. Kubu, alongside fellow newcomer Jackson Siketi, represents the new wave of players eager to make their mark on the international stage.
The anticipation surrounding Kubu’s debut adds emotional depth to the tournament, signifying not only a personal milestone but also a step forward for Kenyan rugby as it continues to diversify and enhance its global reputation. Fans are hopeful that Kubu’s presence on the field will inspire not just his team but also young athletes aspiring to play rugby on international platforms.
As Kubu takes his first steps in the HSBC Vancouver Sevens, his journey stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for many, emphasizing how perseverance and passion can lead to remarkable opportunities in sports.
