Former Minister for Fisheries and Forests Kalaveti Ravu and Principal Fisheries Officer for the Northern Division Tekata Toaisi have been found not guilty of all charges against them. Ravu faced allegations of abuse of office, while Toaisi was accused of aiding and abetting that abuse.
The ruling was delivered by Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou, who stated that there was no case to answer for either of the accused at the conclusion of the prosecution’s case. The verdict was announced in the Suva Magistrates Court, where both individuals stood trial.
Following the acquittal, the court has allowed both Ravu and Toaisi 28 days to file an appeal if they choose to do so. This case highlights the importance of due process in the legal system and reflects a commitment to ensuring fair trials. The outcome may serve to reassure those involved in public service that accusations can be challenged effectively within the framework of the law.
