Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was urgently taken to the hospital after suffering from severe abdominal pain inside the Suva Magistrates Court today.
During a hearing for a bail variation application this afternoon, defense counsel Davenesh Sharma requested the Court to excuse his client so that Sayed-Khaiyum could receive medical treatment for his pain.
Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza granted the defense request, allowing Sayed-Khaiyum’s aide and brother, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, to escort him to the hospital.
The Court temporarily adjourned the session to allow Sharma to consult with his client, who was in considerable discomfort since the start of the hearing.
Sayed-Khaiyum, who was visibly pale and distressed, was lying inside the accused box due to the intense pain.
The Court has excused him from attending the session tomorrow, where the ruling on his bail variation will be made.
