FNU Takes Bold Stand Against Violence Towards Women and Girls

Fiji National University (FNU) has reiterated its strong commitment to combatting violence against women and girls through the implementation of its Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy and Action Plan for 2024-2026.

In its pledge, FNU maintains a zero-tolerance policy for any form of violence or discrimination directed at women within its community and beyond. Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba underscored the institution’s dedication to promoting inclusivity and equality.

“At FNU, we are committed to creating an environment where every individual feels valued, respected, and safe. Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights, and it has no place in our society,” stated Professor Nabobo-Baba.

She also emphasized the essential role women play in the development of the nation across various sectors, encouraging Fijians to acknowledge these contributions. “Women are integral to Fiji’s progress and success. They are no longer defined by traditional gender roles but are key contributors to education, business, health, and governance. It is imperative that we support and empower them to thrive,” she added.

As the nation observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, themed “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” the Vice-Chancellor sent a compelling message of solidarity. She challenged all Fijians to unite and take decisive action against all forms of violence faced by women and girls.

“I encourage every Fijian to reflect on their role in fostering a culture of respect and safety, to speak out against injustice, and to support survivors. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build a future where women and girls can live with dignity and freedom from fear,” she urged.

The GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan sets the framework for FNU’s initiatives to ensure gender equality and foster a safe, inclusive environment for all.
