The Fiji National University (FNU) is set to enhance its academic offerings with the introduction of three new programs at its Ba, Nadi, and Labasa campuses beginning in 2026. This initiative will mark the first College of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (CAFF) programs at FNU’s Bonunaqwele Nadi Campus, extending students’ opportunities to engage in vital areas of study.
Dr. Kaliova Ravuiwasa, CAFF Dean, expressed the university’s commitment to providing accessible education for youths in Fiji and the broader Pacific region. He emphasized the importance of fostering agriculture, animal health, fisheries, and forestry, reinforcing the university’s dedication to supporting national development goals and sustainable practices.
With many students facing challenges due to the costs associated with relocating to Suva for education, Dr. Ravuiwasa encouraged potential students to take advantage of these new programs to manage their expenses more effectively. He highlighted the significance of protecting and enhancing Fiji’s natural resources through education.
The introduction of these programs, particularly the Diploma in Aquaculture, is expected to benefit coastal and rural communities, offering practical skills for sustainable food production and economic empowerment. Dr. Ravinesh Ram, Assistant Professor and Head of the Fisheries Department, pointed out that aquaculture education will play a crucial role in promoting environmentally responsible practices, aligning with the Aquaculture Bill and initiatives aimed at enhancing the Blue Economy.
These academic offerings also signify an alignment with the tourism sector’s growth. The Bonunaqwele Nadi Campus, recognized as a center for tourism studies, will incorporate the aquaculture program to strengthen its contribution to Fiji’s tourism industry. Opportunities such as farm tours and seafood tastings for visitors are anticipated to benefit local communities economically.
The new programs slated for launch in Semester 1, 2026, comprise a Diploma in Aquaculture at the Ba Campus, a Diploma in Animal Husbandry at the Labasa Campus, and a Diploma in Agriculture at the Nadi Campus. This educational expansion aims to empower students to cultivate ornamental fish farming, enabling them to establish lucrative ventures and increase their income potential.
With the expected positive impact on local communities and the environment, FNU’s initiatives promise to contribute significantly to Fiji’s sustainable development goals while providing valuable opportunities for its youth.
