The Flying Fijians rugby team is set to embark on a rigorous schedule in preparation for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, with plans to play between 20 and 25 Test matches before the tournament. Head coach Mick Byrne has highlighted that this extensive playtime will provide essential experience for the squad, allowing them to refine their strategies and test different player combinations over the next few years.

Byrne emphasizes that the new Nations Championship, launched by World Rugby next year, will present more frequent opportunities to compete against top-tier nations than in past years. He believes that increased match experience is crucial in preparing the team for the challenges of the World Cup, stating, “The fact we get to play it over three years gives us a great opportunity for our planning and development.”

In July, the Flying Fijians are scheduled to face off against the Wallabies, followed by a match against Scotland in August. These matches, particularly the anticipated clash with Australia, are seen as valuable opportunities to measure progress and build momentum as the team gears up for the 2027 tournament.

In parallel, the Fijian U-20 Rugby team is also intensifying their training ahead of the Under-20 Super Rugby competition in New Zealand. Assistant head coach Saiasi Fuli has noted that their training focuses on addressing weaknesses identified in last year’s Oceania Rugby U20 Challenge, particularly in scrums and set-pieces, with just weeks to prepare before they depart.

Byrne’s strategy aims not only to honor the veteran players within the squad nearing the end of their careers but also to integrate younger talent to secure a bright future for Fiji Rugby. With a success rate of seven wins out of ten Test matches in 2024, the upward trajectory suggests that with passionate support and effective preparation, the Flying Fijians could achieve significant success on the world stage.

This ambitious approach reflects the commitment of both the senior and U-20 teams in fostering a new generation of rugby talent while aiming for tangible results on the international stage. The future of Fiji Rugby looks promising as these teams prepare for immediate challenges, setting the groundwork for ongoing excellence.
