Ravutaumada's Road to Rugby Glory: Can Fijian Drua Claim the Super Rugby Pacific Trophy?

Ravutaumada’s Road to Rugby Glory: Can Fijian Drua Claim the Super Rugby Pacific Trophy?

Fijian Drua winger Selestino Ravutaumada, a decorated athlete with an Olympic silver medal and a Rugby World Cup quarter-final appearance, aims higher as he sets his sights on clinching the Super Rugby Pacific trophy. At just 25, Ravutaumada has already achieved significant milestones but remains driven to capitalize on the team’s formidable home performance and translate it into success on the road.

In the 2024 season, the Drua showed impressive form at home, losing only once in seven matches against strong opponents like the Queensland Reds, the Crusaders, and the Melbourne Rebels. Despite finishing seventh on the ladder and being eliminated by the eventual champions, the Blues, in the playoffs, Ravutaumada believes their strong home environment can be replicated away.

“The goal is to make it to the finals and hopefully take the Cup home,” said Ravutaumada, reflecting on the importance of consistent performance regardless of the venue. With family support a strong motivator, he noted the comfort of playing at home versus the different atmosphere while on the road. “If we can address individual preparations, we will be unstoppable,” he added, emphasizing the need for greater focus and determination during away games.

Ravutaumada, who has made a name for himself in rugby after switching from league due to a shoulder injury, has contributed significantly to Fiji’s national team, helping them achieve a historic win against the Wallabies in the Rugby World Cup pool stages. As he prepares for his upcoming match against Australia in July, he transitions to a new chapter in his career, having signed with the French club Racing 92. Although 15-a-side rugby is his priority, he remains open to representing the sevens squad for major tournaments if needed.

Facing a delayed start to the Super Rugby season due to past shoulder surgery, his expected comeback in round four is much anticipated by fans. Given the growing opportunities for Fijian talent in international rugby, Ravutaumada’s journey continues to inspire many young athletes, showcasing the potential pathways available for Pacific Islanders in global sports.

Ravutaumada’s ambitions highlight the positive trajectory of Fijian rugby, as players like him not only enhance their careers but also raise the profile of Fijian athletes on the world stage. With his sights set on future successes, both for himself and his team, there is a renewed sense of hope and excitement for what lies ahead.
