The Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, recently organized a significant conference with cabinet ministers from the Coalition government to confront the escalating concerns regarding youth drug abuse, increased street dwelling, and the rising incidence of HIV among the young population. This meeting marked a collaborative effort aimed at developing immediate and sustainable strategies to address these pressing social issues affecting Fiji’s youth.

Discussions during the conference focused on enhancing rehabilitation and reintegration programs specifically tailored for young individuals living on the streets. The ministers acknowledged the necessity of enforcing stricter regulations to deter individuals from relocating to urban areas and living on the streets, a sentiment that was echoed in previous meetings. Establishing specialized rehabilitation facilities for young street dwellers grappling with substance abuse was identified as a pivotal step in addressing this crisis.

Minister Kiran underscored the critical need for cross-sector collaboration to tackle the root causes of street living and drug addiction. Additionally, participants recognized the vital role community engagement plays in addressing these challenges, reflecting a previous call from Minister Ifereimi Vasu for families and communities to be proactive in supporting at-risk youth.

The outcome of this meeting is a hopeful declaration from all attending ministers to enhance coordination among ministries, widen the scope of intervention programs, and implement long-term solutions that prioritize the welfare of Fiji’s youth. This collective commitment indicates a strong dedication to fostering a nurturing environment for vulnerable young people, reinforcing the belief that with united efforts, positive change is indeed achievable.

By focusing on rehabilitation and community collaboration, the government is paving the way for innovative solutions to combat the intertwined issues of substance abuse and homelessness, presenting an optimistic vision for a safer and healthier future for all Fijians.
