Family neglect is reportedly driving children towards drug use, as highlighted by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection in Fiji. Director for Children, Arieta Tagivetaua, emphasized that many young individuals seek refuge in drugs to escape feelings of pain, rejection, and emotional neglect within their homes. She noted that without parental support, children often struggle alone, which can lead to dangerous coping mechanisms.
Tagivetaua’s statements come amid ongoing concerns regarding rising substance abuse among youth in Fiji. Similar warnings were issued by the Fiji Council of Social Services, which reported cases of children as young as ten using harmful substances in Lautoka, often as a result of being deprived of emotional and social support at home. This alarming trend raises questions about parental involvement and the responsibilities of guardians amid such a crisis.
Furthermore, community leaders, including Ioane Naivalurua and Shairana Ali of Save the Children Fiji, have echoed these concerns, advocating for better drug education in schools and proactive family involvement in monitoring children’s activities. Reports indicate a troubling increase in drug-related incidents among youths, underscoring the necessity for urgent community action, particularly from parents.
