Four young sailors from Fiji are making their mark at the 2025 Misto Australian Optimist Dinghy Championship taking place in Brisbane, Australia, from January 14 to January 17. This event represents a significant milestone for Kele Hunter (15), Paul Haynes (13), Malia Sukanavanua (13), and Ayana Hussain (13) as they embark on their first international sailing experience.
The talented sailors earned their spots on the team following their performances at the Fiji National Sailing Championships. Vili Ratulu, a development officer for the Fiji Yachting Association and a former Olympian, emphasized that financial contribution from the sailors was part of the selection criteria since the government grant provided does not cover all expenses. “The grant doesn’t cover everything, so the sailors had to contribute,” Ratulu explained.
The opportunity for participation arose after the Fiji Yachting Association received an invitation from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, showcasing the growing international interest in Fiji’s sailing talent. With the support of the government grant, the young sailors are able to compete on this global stage.
While the team has been training rigorously in Fiji, racing against a diverse array of international competitors presents new challenges. Although the young sailors feel nervous, Ratulu remains optimistic about the developmental benefits of this experience. “Sailing teaches important skills and can lead to jobs on yachts or superyachts. For two of the sailors, this is their first time on a plane, so it’s also a chance to see the world,” he noted.
The team’s primary goal is to complete all races and place well, with Ratulu emphasizing personal development over competitive standings. Their participation not only serves as a pivotal step for these young athletes but also aims to enhance Fiji’s presence within the international sailing community, which may lead to increased interest in the sport back home.
This event highlights the determination and resilience of these young sailors, providing them with invaluable experiences that may inspire further engagement with sailing in Fiji. Their journey is a testament to the potential for growth and success in sports, fostering hopes for a vibrant future in sailing within the island nation.
