Consultants have been appointed to conduct feasibility studies on derelict vessels in Fiji’s waters, according to Joweli Cawaki, chairman of the Maritime Environment Joint Committee and CEO of the Maritime Safety Authority. The studies aim to evaluate the costs associated with removing both partially and completely submerged vessels, as well as wrecks that are stuck on reefs throughout Fiji.

Cawaki detailed that the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) is assisting with this initiative, particularly in the study focused on submerged vessels and reefs. “Phase Two of the process involves clearing these vessels,” he stated, emphasizing the need for detailed cost assessments to present to potential donors who need financial figures to support the project.

The consultant engaged for the submerged vessels is expected to take up to four months to complete the study, which will span the entire Fiji area where these wrecks are found. The involvement of the private sector is also part of the plan, as they will carry out the actual removal work under close supervision.

Cawaki stressed the importance of restoring Fiji’s environment, highlighting that the nation aims to maintain its pristine reputation especially for visitors who seek to enjoy the underwater ecosystem. Previous efforts by the Maritime Safety Authority show a consistent commitment to addressing similar concerns, with plans in blueprints to remove derelict vessels, thereby supporting sustainable practices that protect and improve Fiji’s marine environment.

This initiative is a significant step forward, reflecting the dedication of various stakeholders to safeguard Fiji’s waters and promote a healthy marine ecosystem. As these efforts unfold, they signal a hopeful path towards enhanced biodiversity and ecological integrity in the region, showing that collaborative action can lead to tangible environmental improvements.
