Fiji’s Waste Management Debate: Empowerment or Exploitation?

Environment Minister Mosese Bulitavu has expressed his discontent with comments made by Amitesh Deo, the founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF), who suggested that student volunteers participating in public clean-up campaigns were being exploited. Deo characterized certain aspects of Fiji’s national waste management strategies as superficial.

Bulitavu responded firmly, stating, “Such statements are not only unfounded but also disrespectful to the many young people who participate voluntarily out of genuine civic pride and environmental stewardship.” He emphasized that PRF, as a recognized partner of the Ministry, should align with the principles of Fiji’s two-year National Anti-Litter Campaign, promoting collaboration among diverse partners to effectively tackle the country’s waste challenges.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of understanding the distinction between empowerment and exploitation, commending the young leaders who are actively mobilizing for change. “Our work is accountable, strategic, and community-led—not reactive or misguided,” he stated, urging PRF and other stakeholders to engage as collaborative partners to focus on accountability and innovation in waste management efforts.

This exchange reflects an ongoing dialogue about the importance of genuine community involvement and strategic planning in environmental initiatives. Previous campaigns have seen significant community engagement, such as clean-up drives organized throughout Fiji, which collected substantial amounts of waste and raised awareness about environmental responsibilities. The call for unity and a focused approach suggests that with continued collaboration, Fiji can make substantial strides in addressing its waste management crisis, ultimately fostering a cleaner and brighter future for the nation.
