The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is set to begin its operational phase in May after completing its preparatory phase at the end of April. This development follows the passage of the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Act in December 2024, which established the Commission with the aim of investigating the country’s historical political turmoil and providing closure for survivors.
Dr. Marcus Brand, the Commission’s Chair, stated that the upcoming operational phase will focus on key organizational steps, including budgeting, staffing, and securing suitable office space. He noted that financial constraints would require careful planning to identify available resources from external donors.
Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, expressed her support for the Commission’s upcoming activities, emphasizing the team’s commitment to achieving its objectives without political influence. Kiran highlighted the significance of maintaining the Commission’s independence and its dedication to its mission of truth and reconciliation.
The TRC plans to engage actively with the public to gather contributions and insights as it carries out its work. Previous community consultations have revealed important generational perspectives—while older generations have expressed a strong desire for healing from past traumas, younger generations are more focused on immediate needs such as healthcare funding.
The Commission’s efforts are seen as a crucial step toward uncovering historical truths, facilitating healing, and promoting unity within Fijian communities. There is hope that this initiative will not only address long-standing grievances but also foster trust and cooperation, ultimately leading to the creation of a more inclusive society.
